Hi Rich,

This is in fact an interesting article to begin the year with, to think
about the links between communication technologies and access to
knowledge for the socially disadvantaged.

The Mumbay letter writer mentioned nearly went out of business because
his main business was with writing private letters.

But what about writing an efficient letter to your employer, to an
administration ? Here in France, the public scribe, l'écrivain public,
still exists and is now taught as a trade at the university of Paris
III. There is even an entry in Wikipedia about it.

I guess in a society such as the French where tacit social knowledge is
quite crucial the public scribe will survive when it comes to access
information for the less empowered. In the Yellow pages for the Paris
region today you find 120 entries for "écrivain public". In Germany
where tacit knowledge seems to me less important I had never heard that
letter writing could be a trade to a earn living.

Cordialement
Frank Thomas
