JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL AND INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION ANNOUNCES SPECIAL FORUM ON NEW MEDIA/TECHNOLOGIES AND INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION Editor, Robert Shuter The Journal of International and Intercultural Communication invites proposals for a special forum comprised of state-of-the-art essays on new media/technologies and intercultural communication. New media/technologies abound and, while definitions vary, the terms generally refer to digital information transmitted through computers and wireless handheld devices and include, among others, the Internet, SMS or text messaging, instant messaging (IM), blogs, social media (i.e Facebook and Twitter), social games (i.e Spore Islands), websites, and virtual communities/worlds (i.e. Second Life). Although global communication has been unalterably affected by the emergence of new media, there is a paucity of scholarly research on how they impact international and intercultural communication. The proposed JIIC Forum will present four state-of-the-art essays not to exceed 3000 words (including references) on new media/technologies and international/intercultural communication with the aim of stimulating critical analysis, theorizing, and/or empirical investigations on the topic. While there are myriad ways new media/technologies can affect international/intercultural communication, the following are fertile areas for possible exploration: 1. How do national cultures vary in their use of new media/technologies to communicate within and across cultures? 2. How do co-cultures vary in their use of new media/technologies to communicate within and across cultures? 3. In what ways are cultural/social identities affected by new media/technologies? Conversely, are the uses of new media/technologies influenced by cultural/social identities? 4. How do new media/technologies affect the process of acculturation? 5. How do new media/technologies impact communication between ethnic groups/races? 6. How do social media influence intercultural dialogue? 7. How do social media, social games and virtual worlds affect the development and maintenance of intercultural relationships? 8. How do blogs influence the development of intercultural relationships? 9. Are national cultures developing interpersonal norms of text messaging, and how do these norms influence TM use within and across societies? An essay proposal, not to exceed 500 words, describing the focus, content, and contribution of the proposed submission should be sent electronically by August 10, 2010 to the Forum Editor: Dr. Robert Shuter, Marquette University commj...@marquette.edu Forum essays will be commissioned by October 10, 2010 with final manuscripts due February 1, 2011. Editor will determine the suitability of each proposal and advance selected proposals for review. Each proposal selected by editor to be developed into an essay will only be published in the forum if the completed manuscript meets editor/reviewer requirements for publication. Acceptance of proposal for development does not guarantee publication in the forum. Rich L. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "mobile-society" group.
