Since you have a high mid-range budget, there should be plenty of
options. I would suggest you strongly consider Motorola Moto G. The
most important thing going for it is that you would get the latest
version of Android, that is 4.42 KitKat. And the company has promised
regular updates as well. I am using a Xolo Q 700 and it works fine,
but the native interface is not fully accessible, you have to install
a few apps from the playstore to make it fully functional. But those
apps are free and ones they are installed, it works absolutely fine. .
I have used a recording app on the phone and it works alright in close
range. Haven't checked it out in a not so close range environment so
can't comment. And the recording quality also would depend on the app
used.
