Android One phones in India: 8 things to know
in India as part of its endeavour to bring a good smartphone experience
to a larger set of people.
The programme was first announced in June during the Google IO
conference by Android chief Sundar Pichai.
Here are 10 things to know about the Android One phones...
1. Priced affordably

Google's Android One initiative aims at boosting sales in emerging
markets through affordable pricing and quality software.
With a price target of $100, the company has partnered with Indian OEMs
Spice, Karbonn and Micromax. The Spice Android One Dream Uno is the
cheapest at Rs 6,299, followed by Karbonn Sparkle V at Rs 6,399 and
Micromax Canvas A1 at Rs 6,499.

The Android One phones are available for purchase through online
channels starting today and at retail stores from early October.
The Karbonn Sparkle V is available online exclusively at Snapdeal; the
Micromax Canvas A1 is exclusive to Amazon; while Spice Dream UNO is
available online exclusively at Flipkart.
3. Hardware specifications

Hardware specifications
The Android One phones are based on Google's reference design hardware
and sport a 4.5-inch IPS FWVGA (480x854p) display.
Powered by a 1.3GHz MediaTek quad-core processor, Mali-400MP graphics
and 1GB RAM, the phones have 4GB internal storage and a microSD card
slot that supports cards of up to 32GB capacity.
The three phones sport a 5MP rear camera with LED flash and support for
full-HD video capture, and a 2MP front-facing camera. The Android One
phones come with a 1700mAh battery.

The three Android One phones come with a Nexus-like stock Android user
interface. Although, hardware vendors can preload apps, the software
doesn't feature customization and is optimized for the hardware.
Android chief Sundar Pichai announced that the phones will get priority
OS updates from Google including the upcoming Android L update. The
phone will also receive automatic app updates.
5. Google brings 'Showroom on Wheels'

Google brings 'Showroom on Wheels'
Google will have Wi-Fi-equipped mobile demo trucks called 'Showroom on
Wheels' in 600 locations across 20 cities to allow potential consumers
to experience the Android One phones.
Google has also appointed 30,000 Android One ambassadors who will spread
the word about the phones and guide potential consumers at stores.
6. India first country to get Android One phones

Sundar Pichai informed that India was the first country where it
launched Android One phones.
The search giant plans to take the phones to markets like Indonesia,
Philippines, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and other South Asian markets by
end of the year.
7. New hardware partners

New hardware partners
Google has also signed up deals with new hardware partners to develop
the next set of Android One phones.
These partners include Acer, Alcatel, Asus, HTC, Intex, Lava, Panasonic,
Lenovo, Xolo and Qualcomm.
The first Android One phones are powered by MediaTek but with Qualcomm
coming on board, the next round of devices will also include Qualcomm
Snapdragon-powered phones.
8. Free data bundle from Airtel

Free data bundle from Airtel
Airtel is offering a promotion to reduce data costs for Android One phones.
Android One users will get free over-the-air (OTA) updates, and 200MB
per month worth of app downloads from Google Play for the first six
months --- without counting toward their mobile data plan.
