This has come up a couple of times in the past. Google the list for
the old discussions.

The solution I am using is called Really Simple History
http://codinginparadise.org/projects/dhtml_history/README.html. It
integrates fairly well with Mochikit, although I had to remove the
JSON code that it includes and use the Mochikit equivalent instead.
It's BSD licensed.

It's not completely transparent, since (as Thomas said) the concept of
"what is a page" is not obvious in AJAX, but the API is very simple.
It also manages the case where you are navigating around the enabled
site, you navigate through a series of external sites, then use the
back button to return to the enabled site - the entire history is
still maintained.

I don't know what Mochi's policy on external code is, and I'm too lazy
to look it up :). If they'd accept a modified version of this library,
I'd be willing to tackle "mochi-fying" it, although I don't know how
much maintenance I'd be able to do.

The biggest drawback is that Safari support is not complete. If safari
support is required, http://www.unfocus.com/projects/HistoryKeeper/
claims support, but I've never used it.

None of the available libraries I've tested work 100% all of the time
(mostly due to browser bugs), and they all rely on far to many hacks
to make me comfortable, but that's the nature of the beast.
