That's because you're not calling the functions with the right arguments.
SPAN(null, {attributes}) is not correct. The null should definitely
not be there. Was there something in the documentation that made you
think that the attributes should be second?
I'm just getting back to Mochikit having been distracted by actual work for a few days, I can't say why I thought the null should be there, but I was being driven by the documentation at the time. Removing the null has fixed the problem.
