The way I was doing was wrong :(
It should have been
//userlist = {'users':['lila','lola','lyla']}
function makeupdate(userlist)
{
var list = SELECT({'id':'userlist'}, map(partial(OPTION,
null), userlist.users));
swapDOM('userlist', list);
}
