He says it's a cross platform issue - so it may well work great on
some platforms, but then bomb on others.

No saying he's wrong - but I want to see the platform that blows up on a 'static int' :)

There may be something to do with the pool interface, I think.  I'll
investigate further and see what I come up with.

Ok - let me know. I've also got some FreeBSD, Linux, and Solaris (SPARC) systems I can do some test builds on as well if needed.
