After looking at Dan's solution - that was basically what I was doing
with the ORM object.
The key was in Matt's solution:

> event.setValue("user",user);
> event.addResult("RegistrationFailure");
> }
Passing the object back into the event (with the same name) along with
the failure message. Once I did that everything clicked.
