Oh duh. Yes, yes. That makes sense. In this case, if we do :
<cfset fancyObject= viewState.getValue("fancyObject") />
If fancyObject hasn't even been instantiated, we end up with an empty
string? That makes sense.
In this case in our old cold, depending on circumstances, we don't always
instantiate fancyObject. It always exists but it's the old
<cfset var fancyObject = "" />
I'll thank pre-CF 9's lack of acknowledging variables' right to privacy and
thus encouraging that pesky bad habit of making things exist as something
they're not.
That is, fancyObject is something specific like a car. Only that since the
var keyword has to occur right away in a method, we're creating fancyObject
as a string. Later in the method, if a certain condition is met, we go
ahead an make a nice lil red 1988 Chevette an call it fancyObject. So
fancyObject may be an object or a string. And strings don't have no stinkin
methods.
Thanks Dan.
