Hi Maximilian,
thanks for reaching back and launching this initiative within EclipseSource!
Having multiple maintainers could make things easier so if anybody feel
like getting involved, do not hesitate!

Hi Cedric,
first of all: thank you for your service and dedication for providing
this package for all those years!
I will bring this topic up at EclipseSource and we will discuss if we
see a chance to sponsor an activity to keep this package alive after
Oxygen. I will get back to you by Friday Sept 22nd when more of us are
back from summer vacation.
Cheers,
Maximilian

Hi folks,
I have been maintaining the Eclipse Modeling package for quite a
few years now, I stepped up after Borland stopped leading this
initiative (circa 2010 if I’m not mistaken). I started by
stripping it down to make it smaller and less of a mastodon,
extended it with mechanisms to easily discover modeling
technologies and then helped get new projects on board and hunting
integration issues version after version. This was also my pretext
to interact with many in the community and I liked that.
Since then the way Eclipse technologies are consumed shifted a bit
and users are now relying much more on the marketplace and are
installing technologies through this medium. In my opinion, there
is still value in providing a prebuilt package and this value
comes from the constant testing, analyzing, and nagging of
projects to bring improvements across the board and ship it as a
whole. Pierre-Charles has done a tremendous work in doing exactly
this and providing high-quality builds of OD Community Edition and
as it’s 100% EPL we’ve seen more and more adopters starting from
this package instead of the Eclipse Modeling one. Simultaneously
my ability to do those effort for the Modeling package has been
reduced in the last few years to the point that I now feel like
I’m chasing the milestones. It doesn’t make a lot of sense for
Obeo to sponsor this activity anymore and I plan to step down as
the maintainer of this package.
My plan is to make sure the Oxygen maintenance releases are
happening, and assist whoever wants to take care of this package.
I am not planning to maintain the package for the Photon stream,
if you feel like you’d like to do that, just reach out to me and
we’ll organize a transition.
Cheers,
Cédric
