The way I see it, this list is like a tree and Modest Mouse it the stump, or
maybe the roots, and each new topic is like a branch. Maybe there's other
trees in this forest (Indie Rock National Forest) but we've all decided to
gather around this tree and talk about how beautiful it is. If we start
cutting off the branches, we're all going to be staring at a boring old stump.
How Modest Mouse led to a discussion on hip hop is beyond me, but it seems
there were at least a few people who made that connection. I'm not a big fan
of hip hop, but I found the discussion very interesting. Personally, I thought
all the T-shirt talk was pretty silly, but people seemed to enjoy it, so I
just scrolled through the messages until I found something I liked. As long as
the messages remain Modest Mouse-inspired, people should discuss whatever they
please. This is a great way to introduce new bands/ideas/etc. If nobody replys
to the topic, the branch will die a natural death. This is also why I tend to
be a fan of the "I second that" messages. This is a simple way to add validity
to a topic without rambling on and repeating something that's already been
said. If more than one person agrees that a band is good, I'm going to be more
inclined to keep an eye out for their music in the used bins. This is how
seeds are planted and new trees are born. Save the forest. This is my opinion.
