well, consensus seems to be that tangents are good; i say, fine, how about
moving away from useless and self-propagating discussions of our relative
social worth.
that being said, the hip-hop tangent was sort of interesting. especially
since most people on this list (myself included) are fairly ignorant of the
genre. also, it has been my experience that many so-called "indie"
people/snobs/self-affirmed geeks listen to underground, or whatever, hip-hop.
this could be biased by the fact that i go the univ. of chicago, which is on
the south side of the city (and consequently hip-hop, as you can imagine, has
a rather large following).... either way, given recent postings regarding
walmart and whatnot, i assume that people here are interested in "underground"
music--so long as it is not watered-down, sold-out, etc.
on an entirely different note.... how about tortoise/the make-up/modest?
three very different bands (i assume this is just a show, and not some all-day
lollapalooza shit), but all very energetic live. i've liked the
modest/califone juxtaposition both times i've seen it, and although califone
is certainly miles apart from tortoise, the idea is the same. something more
instrumentalish. and the make-up just to tear shit up and brighten things up.
gotta love the gospel yeh-yeh.
p.s. who needs silly t-shirts... we should all be wearing identical silver
suits anyhow.
