i like reading top 10s, so ill write one, plus im very bored. might not turn
out to be a top "10" though. this isnt necessarily in any type of order.
tops of 1998:
one: BLACKSTAR "mos def and talib kweli are" :this makes me feel the way i
felt when i started listening to a tribe called quest and de la soul back in
middle school. this is the slickest stuff out there. these two flip some
crazy, smart shit over some of the greatest tunes. get this, and support the
real.
two: SOUL COUGHING "el oso" :this is amazing stuff, hard to describe. its
funky as hell and slyly evil at the same time. and ive honestly yet to hear
"circles" on the radio. in the past theyve vocally ripped off a tribe called
quest and fugazi. that says something.
three: UNKLE "psyence fiction" :this rocks crazily and is so extremely
beautiful. so many styles are represented here. so many i couldnt list them
and some styles i couldnt even come up with a word for. this is a record that
so many different types of people could like. this IS the future of music.
four: BEDHEAD "transaction de novo" :this is beauty. its sparse at times,
its jangly at times, its loud at times, its meditative at times, its swayaing
at times, and most of the time its just sad and beautiful. live, their cover
of joy divisions "disorder" gave me the chills.
five: POLVO "shapes" :very different from past records, not as "whacky", bad
word, sorry. its more mature sounding. they can do no wrong though. r.i.p.
six: APHEX TWIN "come to daddy" :did this come out this year, or late last?
i dunno what to say, but this is really fun and interesting to listen to.
seven: CAPPADONNA "the pillage" :the tenth member of the WU. alot of people
dont like this, but i love it. i can see why they dont like it, his spots on
the raekwon and ghostface albums where alot better than anything on here, but
oh well. he refers to WTC alot, "now im on the frontline with WTC", for the
longest time i thought he meant Whole Sale Tire.
eight: 764 HERO "get here and stay" :this so so so much better than the
first lp.
this flows so smoothly and is just breathtaking. this is one of those times.
nine: LAURYN HILL "the miseducation of..." :pras sucks, wyclef is pretty
lame. so this record is perfect. im not even sick of "doo wop" yet. she has
the sweetest voice and she has mad rhyme skillz too. i am in love with this
woman.
ten: RED MONKEY "make the moment" :this is good old fashioned gang of
four/wire type punk rock. update the love/anger issues or leave them alone,
and throw in ex members of pussycat trash and milky wimpshake. this'll make
you dance like you dance to gang of fours 'damaged goods' and 'i found that
essence rare'. very interesting lyrical content as well.
honorable mention: CATPOWER: "moon pix" METHOD MAN: "tical 2000: judgement
day", THE LAST CRIME: ep, AERIAL M: full length and singles,
SONIC YOUTH: "a thousand leaves", SUNZ OF MAN: "the last shall be first",
ill just list the rest, you know the titles...
