okay. here it goes.
met up with my friends in the late afternoon, drove to harrison and PATHed
it in. It was snowy/rainy, and it didnt seem that bad.
got to new york, made it to st marks, and WAITED. did a bagel run, a camera
film run and then waited some more. WAITED WAITED WAITED. Met that Russ
guy. He was loud.
The usual indie rock people walked in and out, blah blah. i spent most of
the time in the rain, zoning out, and singing unrest's "imperial" in my
head. Tried really hard not to concentrate on the fact that i could have
been at homenice and warm.
Doors open! Yay! get the tickets, book for the stage. found a nice spot on
the left side, where all the people were walking in and out.
les savy fav: yay! i love this band. everytime they play in philadelphia, i
pretty much stop everything i do and try to get into the shows. this show
may have been one of the best times i've seen them play. [best being the
first time i saw them, two years ago, opening for trans am at the
westbeth]. their new drummer looks a lot like that guy from the SportsNight
sitcom. i wonder... bought a 7" of theirs, that is currently playing on my
record player this very moment. this track "our costal hymn" sounds very
much like bent leg fatima's "mouse", but if it was more hard rock, than
pink floyd and poppy.
downtime - spent it writing some in my MM show journal [to be posted at a
later date]. zoning out to yet another unrest song. my friend jay throws me
a ricola from the other side. mmm. refreshment.

If you've got perl, you can use the GIFgraph module.

e very good. i liked the new stuff, and they played the
old stuff very well. not as disco-y as i alway thought they were, which was
one of my reasons for liking the band. regardless. with each time that i
see them, my respect and fondness for jeremiah and eric grows. they're one
helluva rhythm section, but i shouldnt have to be telling you that. :) the
guy from les savy fav [i wish i knew his name] joined them for doin the
cockroach. even if he didnt get the right words, the screaming was
appropriate.
i dunno what to say. the band was clean, no broken strings, no noticeable
fuckups. they were solid, yet they did not bowl me over, like that kind of
performance should. no real suprises in the setlist. one of those news
songs sounds like 'cowboy dan' and i dont think thats good, simply because
ill think, "oh they ripped off cowboy dan to make a new song." sometimes,
reworking something is good, but in this case, it wasnt.
i took some nice photos, which i've begun to print. what i did notice, was
that everyone and their mother brought along their camera. weird, as in
philadelphia, i get funny looks if i whip mine out. i chatted with the guy
who shoots MM frequently, simply because he had a really neat rangefinder
[which wasnt one, but a camera that shoots 2 pictures on one frame of 35mm
film. very cool].
the crowd: to that guy who bitched about everything, matthew waggner
whatever: yo, lighten up. that crowd was nothing compared to the bullshit
that goes on here in philadelphia. this show was the nicest MM crowd i've
dealt with since i first saw them play to about 30 people at a gym on
princeton university. phila crowds are all about going to be seen for the
scene, which is why i've started seeing shows in other towns like baltimore
and dc.
regardless, you've got to understand that people are going to be assholes
at these things. the fact that they payed their money, thinks they have the
godgiven right to push their way to the front and whatever. shakespeare [or
some old dead white guy :)] once said, "the worlds a stage and we are
merely players" and i think this applies even more so to the whole indie
rock spiel. everyone's a player, everyone buys into the look, and the sound
and whatever. people are always going to try and one up another, so live
with it. i can think of a couple people who play the "how many guestlists
have you been on game" - which frankly sickens me, but at times, even i've
been found doing it. it is a scene, and people do want to belong, and
they'll do anything. thats human nature. if the whole indierock think wasnt
a scene, then they'd never have shows, and theyd never have bands, and they
wouldnt do anything. so what am i trying to say? oh yeah, live with it or
dont go to shows at all.
and, i do think it was a rather nice crowd. no one shoved, pushed, and
tried to stage dive.
ill add more, at alater date, when i've gotten over this bronchitis i've
accquired from being out in the snow sunday night.
