Spandau Ballet's "True" is still an excellent song. . .one of those guys is
an actor now, and has been in a few well-known films, though i can't remember
right now his name or which ones. Used to have a real affinity for Dexy's
Midnight Runners, though Save Ferris' cover-slaughter fixed that problem
quick. I have a bootleg where Versus cover ELO's "Livin' Thing" (not sure
you've heard it? it's the song playing during the ending credits of Boogie
Nights, for a more recent point of reference). Played faithfully; pretty
amazing.
Blue Oyster Cult's "Burnin' For You" and "Don't Fear the Reaper" still work
for me; no irony here. The sorrow of Falco's "Gina" is only doubled by his
recent, unfortunate demise (involving a bus and a 3rd world country, though
the specifics escape me now). Sad that the world only realizes him for "Rock
Me Amadeus." Wall of Voodoo is good, period. I have Taco's "Puttin' on the
Ritz" on 45 and i wear that shit out. . .used to be my favorite song back in
the day. . ."dressed up like a million dollar trooper/trying hard to look
like Gary Cooper/ SuperDuper!" (don't forget to sing the last part in your
best Vocoder-Robot voice). . .i have Maneater on 45, though only for
amusement; hall & oates were always shit (and if their music doesn't stand as
testament to that fact to you, just consider the fact that they helped fuel
G.E. Smith's non-career). . .Steely Dan are a great band, period; other than
the fact that they were all studio musicians who tended to do too many
useless solos; listen to "Bad Sneakers" or whatever the hell that song was
called; it really is pretty damned good. . .
hmm. . .i should probably stop myself here. . .
one last thing: who doesn't feel their inner patriotic boxer stir at the
opening power chords of "Eye of the TIger?"
That's what I thought.
