Oh my gawd, why am i writing this?

 It's about the music, people.

Yeah! it is. And as long as the record labels are "about the music" as much as the
band is, then everything should be fine. Are they? I have little knowledge about this.
Does anyone else? Does anyone know anything about indie and/or major labels? I'm
curious for more information.

My music-in-society text offers a little bit of history about "The Establishment"
(major labels). I don't know what the bounds of plagerism are, and i don't know if i
was the only one who didn't know this already, but here's a summary of some of what it
says:
Basically Rock-and-Roll was once the "indie pop/rock" of today, and "Tin-Pan-Alley"
was the commercial-radio "top fourty." Tin Pan Alley was controlled by the record
labels. They looked for what was popular and had their hacks grind out more of the
same. When Rock-n-roll became popular "with the kidz" the establishment resisted, but
eventually gave in and released "watered-down versions of R&B songs sung by white pop
stars," and they " 'manufactured' the the teenage idols..." (The World of Music by
David Willoughby- i really hope i didn't just break some laws)

To me, a lot of those things don't sound like they were "about the music." But it
doesn't say anything about how things are today, so that is what i'm asking for.

I like Modest Mouse because i like their kinda-whiney, distorted,
sometimes-just-yelling-and-having-a-good-time sound; because i can listen to a song
and hear something new each time i hear it; because of their crazy-silly (but not
without meaning) lyrics (i/my sister first decided to take the leap and try out their
music because we figured any band that would name a song "sunspots in the house of the
late scapegoat" couldn't be half bad.) And those were things i wasn't finding too much
of on Casey's Top Fourty countdown- so do i like them because they're *indie* or do i
like them for their music? Is indie the style or the record label or are the two
intertwined? Let's ask the sphinx.

just trying to sort things out for my own sake,
appy-polly-loggies to Phil for possible over-use of his quote
