CAUTION - DIATRIBE FOLLOWS

Well, I thought I would be jumping to conclusions by
assuming that you were referring to the Gulf War, but
apparently not...

>It isn't enough to say, "I didn't vote for him," or
>"I was
>to young to votefor him" because that trivializes the
>thousands of Iraquis
>who gave up theirlives for a lie.

Don't forget the people of Kuwait who were also slain
in the fight for the crude oil of the Persian Gulf, as
well as several Americans. And for that matter, let's
think about the innocent people of Kosovo, Somalia,
Cambodia, and East Timor. What has America done to
help these countries (or soon-to-be countries) that
have faced political and religious struggles, not to
mention ritualistic killing and/or genocide? And how
could we forget the countless Vietnamese who fell at
the hands of the United States' policy of containment?
 What of that?

>I justdont understand..to say that "it was just
>government" when
>the CIA wasfunneling crack into ghettos to try to
>enslave an entire
>generation of blackpeople, how can the entire country
>not be outraged by that?

At this point you're starting to lose me... the entire
community IS outraged by drug use and gang violence,
to the say the very least. The more pertinent
question becomes, "What has been done about it?"
Programs are instituted, measures are taken, but in
the case of drug use, the issue is more a problem of
free will dictating one's actions. Yes, there is an
element of chemical dependency that cannot be ignored,
but I believe the government has far less to do with
that than, say, selling arms to Iran.

>People don't seem to be outraged
>anymore..its like thegovernment has done so many
>terrible things that when they
>do something elseits lie.."well thats government".
>How can someone possibly say that?

I don't think that is the case at all. Just because
those of us who are fed up with the American
government are not rising up in a air of revolutionary
urgency doesn't mean that we are not disturbed or
affected by these injustices everyday. The rights of
human beings are being compromised the world over on a
daily basis. How much have you heard on the news
about the tragedy in Kosovo? You read the stories in
the newspaper about soldiers gang-raping women and
turning an entire village into the site of a massacre.
It does affect our lives, but what are we doing about
it? What are you doing about it?

I think it's great when celebrities like Adam Yauch of
the Beastie Boys can raise awareness with regard to a
political or social problem in the world today. And I
also believe it's admirable for individuals to
organize benefit concerts and albums to raise money
for various causes. But other than attending these
concerts and buying these CD's, what are you (as a
human being who is conscious of the evil inherent in
the world) doing to make a difference? I'm not
addressing you directly, Mark, but I'm merely trying
to make a point, and that point is this:
Raising awareness is only the beginning.

>We have to showthem that we
>aren't cattle anymore, that if you lie cheat and
>steal itwill not be
>tolerated.

See, this is where everything gets tricky because
actually people DO lie, cheat, and steal everyday.
And they get away with that. Not just our government,
but many governments are corrupted by money or power
or more. More than any other facet of the system, the
government is dependent on the economy for success. A
healthy economy equals more taxpayer money at their
disposal. And it is our money that enables these
scoundrels to carry out their devious motives. Fight
Club addresses the materialism that the government
promotes, exposing the lie behind society's apparent
need to acquire more and more goods & services. Fight
Club even demonstrates some methods of subliminal
advertising during the film, further driving home the
point. So is there not a message in Fight Club as
well then? A message that might serve us well if
properly learned someday.

you're not the one who let me down
but thanks for offering,
*phiL*
