> Would love to know about what else is in Knoxville actually. Subbluecollar, Pegasi 51, Dent, the Come Ons, Hometown Slackers Make Good, the Ghosts, Beeswax, Mustard... that's what I can think of offhand. > Funny that you > tell me to stop living in the eighties but make a reference to a dead as fuck > 60s/70s band like Hawkwind when describing Skeyebone. I didn't tell YOU to stop living in the 80s. I said "let's stop living in the late 80s/early 90s, people", meaning that "indie rock" is a stale genre with little to no innovation happening. Does that mean the 80s/90s indie pop kings are bad? No, that's why I said to listen to them at home. And what does it mean that Hawkwind is "dead"? There are a LOT more bands out there making indie pop than bands that sound like Hawkwind. And I'd rather have Hawkwind's "Ambient Anarchists" comp than any Husker Du album, sorry to say. > I live in all the periods of music actually, including today. I own > about 600 cds and about a thousand albums that cover a hundred years of music > and get paid for what I know. I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean. Does that mean you "know" what music is "good"? Nobody can ever say what music is "good", only what music they like. Does that mean you "know" what music you "like"? You don't need to tell me how many albums you have to do that. OH, I know, it's supposed to mean "look at how eclectic I am"! Well guess what, Bufondo, I can listen to Willie Nelson, Ministry, Mogwai, John Zorn, Front 242, Rex, Velvet Underground, Amon Duul II, Black Sabbath, Labradford, Lightnin' Hopkins, Run-DMC and Negativland all in the same night, too. Am I cool yet? > I think that I have branched out about as far > as humanly possible in my 28 years on earth Do you own any speed polka? Serious question. > As for leaving my indie pop at home, there is nothing wrong with some of it > if there is sincerity in the performance, which I believe that Superdrag has. Now we're going to second-guess a band's ability to act, eh? If the sincerity of the band members concerns you, then let me assure you that Superdrag only ACT sincere. Personally, I like music if it makes a joyous noise unto my ears, not if the band is "sincere" or "fake as hell". > If there is a problem with Indie Pop, then I think you are in the wrong > place because the MoUSE has some really poppy shit coming on this next > record. Did I ever say I had a problem with indie pop? No. I have a problem with a genre that doesn't innovate - and indie pop is a genre that does not innovate. How many bands have I heard in the past couple years that sound JUST LIKE Modest Mouse or Polvo? Too many. Way too many. The indie pop genre circa right now is about as stale as punk had become by around 1985. Now, does that mean I don't like the bands that do it right, such as MMouse? No, it doesn't. Just because I hate NOFX doesn't mean I can't like the Dead Kennedys. > Well, as poppy as they can get. It still isnt the Gigalo Aunts...but > if Indie Pop is such a terrible thing then where does that leave Husker DU? > Oh, yeah, in the eighties so they must suck ass too, right? There you go presuming again. I like Husker Du. I don't like seeing a band that sounds exactly like them. Anything getting through over there chief? > Our personal preferences towards bands and styles of music are just that, > personal. Trying to dis someone's opinion on a band by saying that the type > of music they play is tired is a juvenile and argumentative approach to the > situation. Hey, here's a clever thought, how about you read what I wrote before you respond next time? I actually even explicitly said I wasn't coming down on yr opinion. If you like a band, then to you, they are good. This is why I would never say, for example, that Godspeed You Black Emperor! are "better" than the Spice Girls - just that I personally like them more. > Soounds like you have personal problems with the band. Didn't I say that? Yes, some of the past/present band members really are pretty annoying. But, once again if you'd bothered to read what I wrote, I said that has no bearing on whether I like their music or not. I despised them from the very first time I heard that godawful first single of theirs, before I even moved to Knoxville. > Maybe you > should go talk to them and ask, as you called him, "Flame" Davis about your > problems and opinions. If everyone in Knoxville that didn't like Superdrag or the people in it did that, they'd never go out in public. Oh wait, they DON'T go out in public! Hmm! > As for me, I think that I will go listen to Superdrag > and then get my head out of the 80's/90's and throw in a record from the 50's > like some Miles Davis. Ohmigod, you listen to indie rock AND Miles Davis? Whoooaaah. Please stop writing like a music critic. Maybe Raygun is hiring and you can do their article on Chris Cornell's solo album. > Indie pop...geez My sentiments exactly. np:Rex, "This is a Recording" -- ...extensive liner notes and make-believe alien languages...
