> top 10 releases of 99:

wow, this wasn't one of the best years in music, but here are my
keepers, in order:

1) No.2 "No Memory"
(Neil Gust shows the world that he's still spot-on. Very much along the
lines of Heatmiser's "Mic City Sons.")

2) Quasi "Field Studies"
(almost as good as their last one. almost. still beautiful as all get
out.)

3) Pete Krebs and the Gossamer Wings "Sweet Ona Rose"
(the album that would finally give Pete the fame and fortune he
deserves... so how come he's still working two jobs?)

4) Modest Mouse "Night on the Sun"
(mmmm good. we already know and love these songs, so where in heaven or
hell is the album? stuffed in the stack with all the atheists?)

5) Pete Krebs "Bittersweet Valentines"
(addictive melodies, beautiful words.)

6) The Promise Ring "Very Emergency"
(i hated this one at first listen, but now appreciate the straight-up
pop these boys are playing these days.)

7) Outhud / !!! split 12"
(groovin' bass-heavy hardcore influenced dub?)

8) Death Cab for Cutie "Something About Airplanes"
(what can i say that hasn't already been said?)

9) The Minders "Cul De Sacs and Dead Ends"
(ever heard The Kinks?)

10) Juno "This is the Way it Goes and Goes and Goes" (tied with)
Bisy Backson "Indestructable Junkshow" (sacto style hardcore, but
these boys are no more)

10 1/2) Elliott Smith ~Abbey Road recordings~
(not officially released but if it were it would actually make number 6)

have i missed anyone? i know this list is dominated by NW bands, and
predominantly Portland but what can i say? it's the place to be!

xo,
        jason.
