indeed! i saw it in its limited release in los angeles, and it was so 
annoying.  there was even laughter during the bag in the wind scene. . .it 
started with two or three people, and then spread - you know, gotta make sure 
you're in on the joke even if a.) you're not, or b.) there is no joke.  so 
damned annoying.
and, though i liked american beauty alot, i would also have to agree with 
your contention of happiness. . .simply a beautiful film.  it's a shame that 
people find it a bad thing that it portrayed "unsavory" characters such as a 
child molester as anything but a boogie-monster stereotype. phillip seymour 
hoffman, dylan baker, and ben gazzara were so excellent!  and, the return 
(though short) of jon lovitz.
