Well, Bill, you seem to be awfully knowledgable about
the music business. Perhaps you could explain to me
the inherent exclusivity clause in the band's
contract.
And maybe you could also explain to me exactly where
you get all of these cold hard facts about the
record-buying public. I understand that I'm not the
average fan, but I had no problem paying Up $13.20 for
a copy of the new record despite the fact that I have
every one of those songs on cd-r and the original
format.
Distributing mp3's doesn't undermine an artist's
integrity anymore than handing out cassette samplers
or placing a song on a CMJ New Music Monthly disc
does.

> How many people didn't buy the singles comp because

I'm sorry, is the entire singles comp up on mp3?
I was under the impression that you were talking about
the Japanese tour EP. If someone is downloading the
singles comp off of the internet, I don't think it's
from Russ, now is it? You're not going to find
domestically released songs on Russ's site, I'm
afraid. And if someone wants to download an entire
album off of the internet, of course that's going to
detract from sales. But so will copying it onto tape
for a friend of yrs, or buying a promo copy used
instead of purchasing a new one. Money lost.

No one is claiming that Modest Mouse is a victim of a
major label except you. They chose to release an EP
in Japan only, and I decided that despite the fact
that I didn't live in Japan, I was going to buy a copy
anyway. I'm not sure how you picked my words apart to
find an argument in them when we're not even married.

do it for the kids,
