i was just flipping through the dictionary, as english majors do, and
found robert pollard's last name.  it dates from the early 17th century
and is "a tree cut back to the trunk to promote the growth of a dense head
of foliage."  hmmmm... 

and brock is from middle english meaning "badger" (the animal, not the
action).
