i don't know if anyone is objecting to a "cleaner" sound, per se. all of MM 's records have been pretty well-produced, and that shouldn't be a problem. Lo-fi hardly ever seemed to me like the way to record, although at one point it was the way to go if you wanted to sound "cool". what is dumb about having piss poor production is that it is not hard, especially for a band who has access to an 8-track or a studio, is that it is not hard to achieve a certain clarity. another lame excuse for liking lo-fi is that it doesn't sound like the over produced crap on the radio. well, i've heard some college radio bands who are just as unoriginal as Third Eye Blind, but get cred because they sound like shit. stupid. bands like Polvo or even Modest Mouse (ie, bands on Touch & Go or bigger indies) sound as clean as anyone, but what sets them apart is their strangeness and experimentation, things that not even major label production can erase. however, there is a fine line between crisp, real-sounding production and smoothed-out, overproduced junk. i'm sure Epic isnt gonna try that on Modest Mouse; it wouldn't fit them at all. but what Epic can do, especially when the new album doesn't sell 5 million copies and Modest Mouse has to recoup the label, is force them to make hits and sell out. hopefully modest mouse has enough integrity to not give in. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
