there are lots of record stores around the dc area as
well as in d.c. philip mentioned a few, but i thought
i'd elaborate to his list and add a few more.
record stores actually in D.C.:
Smash! is on M Street in Georgetown. The phone number
is (202) 337-6274. Smash is more punk than anything.
DCCD [http://www.dogcatcatdog.com] is at 2423 18th st.
in northwest, dc. (202) 588-1810 and it's an alright
store. i have not been there in a good while though.
they're good and all, but i like NOW! a whole lot more.
record stores in northern virginia:
which brings me to NOW! music & fashion. located at
3100 Clarendon Blvd in arlington, va! (703) 528-9059
is their phone number. the staff there are excellent.
their tastes run all over. it's great. um. i guess i
am a bit biased since i just agreed to be the director
of college promotions for them. but i just can't get
over the store! i really do love it. ALL sorts of music.
more cds than vinyl, but they grow by the week. and
they are so good about getting things that customers
suggest they get! whee! a lot of indie stuff here!
and places to sit down and chill. as well as nice
vintage clothing. http://www.nowmusicandfashion.com
RIGHT across the street from NOW! is Orpheus, which
is a collector's record shop. you can find some great
stuff there. plenty of jazz and old rock and roll.
mostly records. some cds. 3173 Wilson Blvd. (703) 294-6774
The Record Mart: 217 King Street in Old town alexandria.
just take the king street metro. then walk down to almost
the bottom of king street. it will be on the left side.
lots and lots of records. and the staff there is really
nice as well. you *can* find some gems there. i have found
a bunch of old 80's movie soundtrack 45's. and i've got
some oop stuff. they also have a bunch of old movies
for sale [some are like 3.95]. whee. (703) 683-4583
Record & Tape Exchange: 9448 Main Street, Fairfax, VA.
(703) 425-4256. i found a PLETHORA of pretty oop 7"s
in a bin there. for insane prices. three magic eye singles
all 2$ each. i think i bought all the cool 7"s though.
um. it's a mix of cds/vinyl. you can find some good shite
there. there is another r&te in college park, md.
CD Cellar: Falls Church, VA (703) 534-6318. go there too.
it's nice as pie. cds aplenty. they sell promos for cheap
there too. i got the new seely before i was out for like
$2.95 or something. yea!
record stores in maryland:
Yesterday & Today Records: 1327 Rockville Pike #J, rockville,
md 20852. (301) 279-7007. it has been ages since i have
been here. they had a bunch of indie/britpop stuff there.
members of velocity girl used to work there, so i am told.
very indie. um. yes.
The Soundgarden [www.cdjoint.com] is in fells point, md.
aka yuppie baltimore. I LOVE this store. it is HUGE. mostly
cds, but there is vinyl if you walk up the stairs to this
little section. it is nice. they have bargain vinyl too.
um. yes. go there! (410) 563-9011.
Reptilian Records: punk rock in baltimore. (888) 909-6853
403 S. Broadway. Baltimore, md 21231. i have never been
in this store, cos i'm not very punk. beware. they can
smell if you are not punk rock! so i hear!
Phantasmagoria: 11319 Elkin St. Wheaton, md. (301) 949-8886
a record/cd store as well as a venue! i have only bought
one thing there ever. it's alright.
There are still a few more that i didn't mention:
Roadhouse Oldies, CD warehouse [well once in awhile
they have insane bargain cds], P & L Compact Discs,
and Second Story Books & Antiques. That's either 'cos
i have never bought anything at those stores, or just
'cos i haven't recalled anything really good at any
of those places. hmm.
hmm. yes. regardless, you may have been able to tell
that i just did a research paper on d.c. record stores
from the 1970's to present day. um. got a 98 on it too!
wahey! regardless, hope this helps out. ;)
evol,
madflowr
