on the use of "emo":

i think emo was initially meant to define certain "emotional" punk-ish rock
bands. one of the first was Rites of Spring, and you could even lump bands
as dissimilar as Fugazi, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Shudder to Think could
into the category if you really wanted to. then, in my opinion, the bands
started getting unoriginal and, most importantly to me, very wimpy. in the
mid/late 90's, this emotional punk developed into some sort of samey
punkpop.

now when me and my friends say "emo", it's usually meant as musical slur to
refer to any band we don't like because of uninspired punkpop and inane
lyrics about girls, holding hands, and geographical references. thus,
Burning Airlines, Dismemberment Plan, Modest Mouse = not emo (i've seen all
of them labeled that way); get up kids, hot water music, alkaline trio = emo
(though they may not always be labeled that way). not saying that this is
the correct usage, but it's how i use it.

what im trying to say is that everyone has their own definition for "emo" so
try not to jump down someone's throat when they use it the "wrong" way.
