"I attempt to ask for more information of the band's history. Brock
sets aside his beer, sits up and looks me square in the eye. 'Modest
Mouse was formed' he intones, 'when great Father Zeus was trimming his
corns and threw his shavings towards Earth. Once there, these shavings
formed a perfect creature. But a seagull, sent by the evil god
Seagullis, crapped on this creature. The perfect creature began to twist
on itself , hate itself, eat its own feces and make love with itself. It
split into three parts. Ericosis, Jermosis and another part which
withered and died. Then Isaac, the God of Goodness, came to this
creature.....'"
"Brock rattles off a long list of Isaac the God's superhuman
accomplishments, feats which encompass many of the landmarks of Western
Civilization. Brock eventually stops. 'Well, I guess the story kind of
broke down there. Sorry. We get bored of saying the same story over and
over. How many times can you tell people you met on a public-access TV
dating game?'"
I've read several other interviews and this by far is the best
explanation for their origin.
