I was really going to try and be the first, but I figured I was so far from
it that I hadn't bothered yet, so you beat me to it.
Picnics Picnics Picnics...
So I won't go too much in to detail about my epic adventure just getting to
L.A.
To shorten it, I allowed the airlines to bump me from my flight 4 times and
ended up with $2200 in future picnic flying miles to use for a year. I'm
already working out a movie deal with FOX/Searchlight pictures which will
detail my hardships and triumphs at the Austin/Phoenix/LAX Airports. Also,
they lost my checked bag.. which had my mini disc mics and recording
stuff... so it was like big, weird, strokes of karma were lashing me
repeatedly about the head, breast, face, and neck. Good luck.. bad luck..
good luck.. bad luck... overall.. Good.. the $2200 will pay for the trip
and any losses once I pawn off half the miles and keep the rest for future
trips.
So we went to the picnic pretty early too, about 12:30. I think we saw the
last of Creeper Lagoon, if they were the band that covered, 'Where is my
mind?'. I thought the next few bands sucked... DJ Me, DJ You, Don Caballero
(Are these the Rush/Yes prog-rock guys?), Sensefield (sucked a lot), and
yes, I did not care much for Granddaddy. I like them on album ok, but their
live sound did not reinforce my liking for them, but detracted from it. It
was just a little ho-hum strum strum.
At the drive in delivered much cargo, on time, and with a smile. I would
hate to see these guys in a small club, they would most certainly hurt
themselves or others. I dug them a lot, but about half way through their
show I left my friends and headed front and center for the Mouse. Saw nurse
morgan, and Kate with an 8, and leigh leigh leigh leigh leigh and KG make
Threee. We talked and pointed fingers as planned and someone gave me a
stick of gum. At this point I remember I end up wearing an IN-N-OUT burger
t-shirt that I bought just hours before at the IN-N-OUT burger. Once the
Mouse starts, everyone breaks up somewhat, trying to get the best angle.
I'm content in the middle. The Mouse rocks, but not like they rocked in
Austin, and they played all the same songs in their short set so there was
nothing that really stuck out about their performance in my mind... maybe
Isaac's holy shirt that Leigh mentioned. He looked like a kid who just got
beat up while running laps around the gymnasium.
Right before the last song ended, I jetted back to the left stage to try
and get some center action for Built. It's weird when you don't get to
stand there and give up post play clapping for bands you like because you
are already off and listening to another one. Built was awesome... maybe
because I've only seen them once, for about 25 minutes.. but mostly
because, well, they're awesome... Doug really tore it up.. they played 3
days, broken chairs, car, V reel around the fountain.. some other song.. the
macy gray song.. and uhm a Sabbath Song, Mr. Crowley. It rocked. All of
them rocked.. esp. Reel Around the Fountain.. that was one of the things I
knew if I heard I would instantly feel all hardships would have been well
worth it. And I did.
After that was starving, went to get some food. Met up with my friends.
Ate some sort of burger with pinapple on it. It slid down my throat without
having to chew it up. Heard Delta 72 belting out Philly Soul Power. Went
and watched them and they were rocking hard like they always do. Wanted to
see Beachwood Sparks.. they sounded great warming up but Heard blue man
group.. ran across the lagoon and saw them.. they were a lot of fun and
really cool... then Beck came on and played an all Acoustic set.. I really
wish I had a lawn chair and some lemonaide spiked with vodka... it was so
nice at that time of night and the sound was so good....
So then we went home and went to bed early.
I will have a 'best of' for the picnic coming up when I have time.
I'm at work you know.
