I've gone all weekend with this uneasy feeling because some caloused person
casually said on this
mail list last week, 'saw ween.. it was boring'.
I just am not sure who goes to a ween show in the first place if they would
find it boring???
I just saw Ween play back to back at Stubb's, Austin which doesn't sell out
for Indie type bands often, but did
on these nights.
I think Mouse came close, but they did not sell it out.
Anyways, I seriously doubt any band touring right now could out-do Ween's
live show, and if you think you know
of one, let me know and I'll go see them (I have airlines miles, remember?)
. There are some bands that
are intense, but they usually are intense for about 50 mins and then go back
to sleep. Ween played for THREE HOURS both nights. Also incredible is how
they can play some of their earliest songs and make them sound great, and
they can also play some of their newest songs and make them sound like they
are songs you've listened to for a long time. They only played 5 songs that
were the same both nights.. so they probably played about 40-50 songs over
those 2 nights. I'm sure many of you guys would agree with me that it would
be cool if MM would spread the love around all their albums and not always
play the same 6-8 core songs with a few surprises if you are lucky each
show.
Fri. they played 2 Wing's hits, If We Ever Get out of this Place (and the
keyboards sounded RIGHT ON) and Band on the Run. A few songs later they
played their standard cover Hot For Teacher which always rips. Dean ripped
the whole night, like he does everytime they play... he gets on that talk
box and goes wooow woooow waooooooww.. incredible how much he puts in to his
playing as do all the members of the band.. they are all so good and well
rehearsed that they can play so many different songs and types of songs and
they all sound great.
I didn't always like Ween because it bugged me so much that I couldn't
figure out where they were coming from..
were they being funny? Did they have some hidden meanings in everything they
did? Then I finally figured it
out that the only place they are coming from is the land of good music and
it didn't require that you 'get it' or not.
So, maybe you don't even like Ween, but I wish you did. You would be better
for it. Most indie bands explore
such a small space.. even though they do it well... but Ween fully exploits
the potential that is out there in music and in the world.. for that reason
I can mention them with people like Zappa because they make music that
does not follow trends, nor does it make trends happen. That's what
independent music should be, and what it still is to Ween.
2 4 6 8, who does Zach appreciate.. WEEN.
