I feel ya Tommy G. I was a huge Star Wars fan like most males that grew up
in the 70's/early 80's. George Lucas' over-use/reliance on CG characters is
ridiculous. The major complaint I have about this is that CG stuff is prone
to a very quick visual obsolesence. I mean, while some of the effects of the
original trilogy do look a bit silly 20 years later, they've held up
relatively well. The use of animatronics & puppets gives it a "timeless"
quality in my opinion. But whenever someone uses CG it ends up looking
pretty darn lame after only a few years. Anybody remember "Lawnmower Man" or
"Terminator 2" and their then "state of the art" graphics? Well, less than a
decade later these effects look really outdated. Even recent movies like
the incredibly stupid "lost in Space" (which I think is like 2 years old)
look preposterous. I'm of the opinion that Jar Jar and all the others will
suffer the same fate by the time the DVDs are all released in 2005. But then
again, Lucas will probably "redo" them again, (a la Special Edition) to make
them look more realistic...yawn.... Why don't you use more puppets, George?
Like The Dark Crystal and Fraggle Rock, these characters pretty much stand
the test of time. I just read some stuff saying that Yoda AND R2 (for some
fucking reason) will be CG. Now that's getting ridiculous. I think I've lost
my faith in the Force. I really hate saying that, but I feel that it's
true....

By the way, is anyone else out there as jazzed as I am about the idea of
DVD-recorders being as prevalent as CDR's are now? I know there are a couple
models out there (over 4,000 bucks though), but weren't VCR's just as
expensive in the late 70s? How many years do you think I have to wait until
I can buy such a device at a fairly reasonable price (like under 500
dollas)? The idea of "copying" all my favorite movies on DVD makes my mouth
drool. While I find myself sometimes being a luddite regarding these things,
I feel that it won't be that long (maybe 4 years). What do you guys think?

P.S. Anybody going to the San Francisco Modest Mouse show in October? I'm
going to do my best to go, but I just start Grad. school like the week
before so things might be a little tough. Bye Bye all....

Jason
