Changing apachectl Defaults

Greetings,

Is there an easy way to change where apachectl looks for the apache httpd
and config
files short of recompiling modperl?

Per the Apache Modules book pg 26, I copied the httpd by hand from the
Apache source
directory to my server root directory.
