Did you have to do all that all at once?
How long did you leave it between the five ways of breaking your
server above and the one way of finding out below?

AFAICT it was less than a week. That was asking for it. I'm a great
fan of incremental development. This was definitely not incremental
development. Take it easier, if you can.
