Thanks Ged, that was the clue. I tried a variety of things, but in the end I just blew away the Apachetoolbox directory and re-installed it. Yes, I could re-compile by hand. But to be honest the process is a little awe-inspiring and although Apachetoolbox didn't give me all th epossible flexibility, I took only an hour or two to build and install a development machine (which is what this is!)
