If you only need to run on mod_perl, libapreq is a good choice. It is the fastest. I don't think it is fully working on mod_perl 2 yet, but maybe someone else can correct me on that if I'm wrong.
It's almost ready. Joe has posted a release candidate here just a few days ago. You need to help to test it in your programs if you want it to see the final release sooner.
