Actually, it is not only there to squeeze out some performance, in my experience it is absolutely essential to do this on a somewhat heavy mod_perl application. So, I'd strongly recommend it, John! And if that doesn't work, you need more RAM! :-) Unless, of course, you max out the CPU, then you need a faster CPU or another box...
