The ld man page doesn't say that ld will link *.so.<number> files,
yet appears that they're widely used. E.g.,

APR/APR/Makefile (or /home/artg/Downloads/mod_perl-2.0.4/xs/APR/APR/
Makefile.PL) to match but I'm not confident of that.
