I came in late to this thread, but if you're running FreeBSD, do *not* mix ports with packages. As in, don't hand-compile some things, but "pkg install" other things. If you want the convenience of locally customized ports as packages, use poudriere and create your own package repo with your own custom settings. -- Randal L.
