Did nothing.  No response code from apache at all.  As far as what the root
problem was, I really have no idea.

I'm at the limit of my expertise.  I know how to configure virtual hosts
with mod_rewrite, mod_proxy and mod_wl_ssl but when I mix either of the
former with the latter on an apache installation the two former just stop
working.
