Unfortunately the Rationals' LP came very late and was
a little tired. There are some knockout tracks though,
"Guitar Army," the Knights Brothers' "Temptation 'Bout
To Get Me" and of course the groovy Faces style instro
breaks... The best stuff,IMHO, remains their singles
tracks and the unreleased (officially) "Fan Club" LP.
A couple of years back the zine HERE TIS did what is
probably the definitive article on the band. It's well
worth hunting down or lemme know and I'll do a copy
for you.
I personally have always considered the Rationals to
be "the" American band that should be considered "for
MODS." I asked Scott Morgan recently about MOD and
his feelings about that. His reply was that it was
basically a non-starter. They liked what they liked,
didn't consider themselves "mod", though the term was
all over in the media but generally considered
"swinging like a pendulum do..", and there wasn't a
movement really. The Rationals like hundreds of other
bands at the time, whether in the US, UK, Canada,
France or India(!), were digging the original rockers,
blues people and whatever else came their way.
To the Rationals benefit, like Townshend and the Who,
had a friend/manager with an outstanding collection of
R&B/Soul records. Of course, as everyone on this list
knows, that once you get exposed to the motherlode -
THERE IS NO TURNING BACK! Detroit/Ann Arbor at the
time also benefitted by being the home of Motown,
Thelma, and a host of other labels, and artists. Scott
and the other Rationals went to high school with
singing sensation Deon Jackson! And some other guy
named Jim Osterburg but that's another story...
So, I guess my point is: it was in the water, and
therefore, in the blood.
A couple of years back (7-8!!!) the Rationals
reformed, mutated slightly, and played all over the
Metro area. They kicked large! With a 3 piece horn
section, a host of their great original tracks and a
slew of knockout soul covers including "Function At
The Junction," "Leaving Here" (still the worlds best
version), "Something's Got A Hold On Me," "I Feel So
Bad"... Can ya Dig IT?
Rationals have a version of "I Need You" on the
NUGETTS BOX set by the way.

Eddie man, you should consider yerself lucky to be
livin' in a town like Detroit. I know it has it's
problems but there are still loads of great people
livin there, and still lots of great music bein made.

Seamus you are a devious man. Them poor stupid
canucks... I hope you have a place for them to park
their dog team? Man that must've been quite a mush
down to CA... seriously though, they must be doin
alright. we love to get out of country, suddenly
we're all patriotic and full of ourselves ie: how
tough we are, how we're not yanks etc... Yep dumb
canucks...

all the best,

COLIN
