As far as finding music, and clothes and other 'tips for teens', I believe 
someone else has already pointed out how helpful your magic friend, the 
Internet, can be.

records: Clutching a wad of cash in your hand, boldly go into the Rockit 
Scientist. It's the music shopping equivalent of angling at Ian Anderson's 
fish farm. In five minutes you've got more than you can carry. A nice girl 
(thanks M) showed me how to get there but now I've forgotten. Carmine St 
near Bleecker maybe.

Then, there is much to be said for simply planting yourself in (just about) 
any city neigbhorhood, strolling the streets, checking out record stores, 
booksellers, clothes/shoes/etc shops, and discovering many little hidden 
gems for yourself.

Depending on which way you're leaning, in NY you'll find gratifyingly active 
skinhead, 90's rock, and hip hop scenes as well.
