RE: "Good Morning Girl", classic, rather "Flamingo jazz" number (much like
his first recorded original "Take My Tip"),in fact the Thin White Duke
himself admitted the number was "from when I was trying to do a Lambert
Hendricks and Ross thing". Always the chameleon! What I got a giggle out of
is him referring to "Can't Help Thinking About Me" as containing the "two
worst lines I've ever written, and let's not even go into Tin Machine.." or
saying that it was influenced by all these French chanson girls (what?). Gee
I don't hear any France Gall in that track. Does anyone else know what he's
on about? I've also heard him dump on "Silly Boy Blue".
It's damn hard for me to pick a fave 60's Bowie track, but certainly they
include "Let Me Sleep Beside You","I Dig Everything","I Can't Help Thinking
About Me","I'm Not Losing Sleep","That's A Promise","Little Toy
Soldier","Baby Loves That Way", "Gospel According To Tony Day" etc et al.
And the list goes on...
A REAL good read on this period of Bowie can be had in "The Pitt Report" by
his first manager Kenneth Pitt. Very cool as it's strictly business, no tell
all gossip bullshit. Pitt was the basis for the character who was Brian
Slade's first manager in "Velvet Goldmine" (speaking of just read an
interview in "Mojo" with Brian Ferry where he said he went to see the film
with Eno and that they were both giggling like children throughout it
whenever one of their characters appeared). It's got some great pictures
too, like one from '66 on an I.O.W ferry with Phil May and Brian Pendleton
of The Pretties and members of The Lower Third. I saw a used copy at The
Princeton Record Exchange a few weeks ago for $5.00!
