Matt stated.
" At the time I met him, I was in transition between Mod and
Indiekid and had a suit, parka and long hair! (like LONG hair) Oh if
only
I'd have known then what I know now."
The image that you described in your anecdote kind of made me laugh
because it reminded me of when I was going through the Mod
transition....long hair....ha ha have we all been there?
We must all agree that you cannot become Mod overnight and it is a
gradual process, however did anyone else just wake up one morning or just
sit and say "yeah, I'm a Mod".
The transition for me personally began when I discovered 'The Who'.
OK I know they were never a Mod Band and they where only in to the mod image
for the money in the early days, but when I discovered them in my early
teens my mind was still in the rock music frame of mind. oh yeah I
couldn't get enough of that long hair and 'moshing'.
Like Matt said he was an 'Indiekid' and when I was going through
this phase, along with other clubs Brighton Beach in the main room (Room
One) was playing 'Classic 60's pop meets the best in new British music".
At this time 'Room Two' was too much for me to handle a full night
of '60's soul / R & B, Jazz & Freak Beat'. But the rarer of the tunes in
Room One such as the early Decca and Atlantic stuff like Clarence Carter, at
the time kind of blew me away because I had never heard tunes like this.
Of course the songs I heard were just a glimpse, a window of the
amount of varied music that is available in the mod scene, with everyone
varying through what's available whether it be Northern Soul or Hammond Jazz
etc.
Of course these days some could argue that 'room two' of Brighton
Beach just doesn't offer enough, but I think we get quite a variation to
please most tastes.
I am sure you all loved my boring story but I hope I have started
something where other folk will tell of their mod transitional tails, I'm
interested to know if other folk aren't.
I suppose its kind of hard to admit what cultures we may have been
into in the past in fear of been 'mocked' by people upon this mocking list
of mockery.
Mock on!
Jonathan.
