Charles Wallace inquired about other Gerry Anderson projects (and I'm
surprised Julian didn't the jump on me...)
His first telly series using real people, not puppets was "U.F.O" and then,
I believe "Space 1999" was the next and last. Previously he'd worked wonders
with the somewhat creepy puppet/marionette shows "Stingray" (dig The
Tornados version of the theme!),"Fireball XL5","Captain
Scarlet","Thunderbirds Are Go","Joe '90"...and am I missing any others?
Themes for most of these, including "U.F.O" were done by Barry Grey. Have
any U.K listers ever seen the skit Peter Cook and Dudley Moore did where
they were made up to look like "Thunderbirds" marionettes? I saw it when
visiting the U.K. in '84 (on the same trip that I saw a variety show that
had Georgie Fame duetting with a young black lady singing "Swingin' On A
Star"). I pissed myself laughing. They looked like their jaws were actually
wired shut and hinged! When I was a kid in the 70's my uncle was always
bringing back Gerry Anderson show Corgi toys from his trips to the U.K and
Ireland. It took me till the late 70's to finally figure out what they were
other than "U.F.O" and "Space 1999" I hadn't seen any of these. I vividly
remember "U.F.O" in the early 70's, in fact I even had a "UFO" lunchbox.
Wonder what that things going for now? I still have my Captain Scarlet cars
and "UFO" moonbase interceptor though!
