It was funny actually. I was having this conversation a few weekends ago in
Manny. He is still in love with a lot of Chess R'n'B/early soul, and claims
he'd dance to it if it came on. 'What was that other one with them in?', he
said. 'Do I Make Myself Clear', said I. 'Yeah, Yeah, I love that one. I'd
dance to that',he replied. I'll be quick to jump to Chris' defence here. He
has been down BB in Leeds for a lot longer than most of us young people,
including the lovely Ms Ridehalgh I believe. He has heard it all before, and
he too was once a Mod. A hardcore Mod, sharper than most due to the very
tough standards that I have been told Leeds once had (and I believe still
does).
I once remember a line dealt to me by a now ailing ex-Mod character of
recent notoriety, known to all Leeds kids at BB. 'I used to be like you two
years ago, you'd have loved me then. A real soul boy, but Garage is so much
groovier, you'll get bored with soul..' Well only time will tell, though he
had had it peddelled him since his youth (r.e. Tinx's article in the recent
edition of The New Breed, thanks again for the mention Hon!) and I'm not so
sure I'd not get that way if I was in that same situation. But you gotta
'Keep Looking, till you find it. When you find it, don't quit'. (Another
soul song covered by a beat band!)
My point was that we need to embrace it all, cos there really isn't
that much left to draw on anymore (r.e. Dorian's comments). That's why in
the New Year you should keep and eye out for a little club in
Huddersfield.... The best of both worlds, hoping to bring together hipcats
and psychsters alike. For everybody to congregate in one location instead of
friends being torn apart in terms of music policy, cos that's what's
happening, esp. when choices have to be made regarding a straight soul or
straight beat night....A Little Something For Everyone.....
I'm tight lipped for now,
Makes a change dunnit?!
Matt....
