I never said he was a soul boy. It'd be a mistake. A big mistake..!
I'd never hear the last of it..!
Nah, knowing your own music is great. Knowing/having other
peoples music is even better.. I'll never forget his face when he asked me
for some rare French beat, I had no idea what the hell he was on about. I
pulled out a copy of Antione & Les Problemes, a record I had picked up the
week before for 1 in a charity shop. I had no idea what it was. OR which
side to play!
That was back in the days when I thought Freda Payne's Band Of
Gold was Northern Soul. Of course I've learnt a lot over the last few years
and realise now that Len Barry and Lulu are the epitome of rare soul and
R'n'B respectively.
I was chatting with my housemate the other day about how
naiive we were when we started getting into the Mod thing. How we used to
buy blue Jelly Belly jelly beans ('blues' for any of you stupid enough not
to get the shallow allusion) from the donut shop in town before a Friday
night out down the Beach. And how we used to run to the station piggybacked
singing..'Long After Tonight Is All Over' at unsuspecting Coppers. It makes
me want to vomit. I used to 'DJ' a 'Northern' set comprising of Isley Bros,
Gladys Knight and The Exciters ('Blowing Up My Mind' not 'Reaching For The
Best'!) and then I'd run out of mediocre stuff and resort to Nancy Sinatra
and Clarence Reid's 'Nobody But You'. I've only ever heard this song once
and that was down Leeds BB. I cringed. Big in Middlesborough apparently.
                 We all grow up eventually.
Why am I taking my time?!
Happier Now Than He Ever Was,
                                Matt....
