I beg your pardon? I can assure you that I am a cultured gentleman of means
and have no truck with carnival sideshows, music halls, popular music or
other low forms of entertainment. I know little of the world of the freak
save what nanny read to me from the journals of John Merrick. Hair-raising
stuff indeed but hardly the heritage of the noble Dodge family. Should I
have been born the unfortunate that you imply, rest assured mater and pater
would have (quite rightly) left me on the mountainside for the eagles.
I'll thank you to keep a civil tongue in your head in future, lest you
should find yourself on the business end of my shooting stick.
