I think the problem here is there are two seperate arguments - there's the
'mod is a British subculture' one, which is true. When people start saying
'where do you think it came from' and assert American roots for certain
styles and music, I'm personally always going to come back on that, because
it's just emphasising certain aspects, and missing the big picture.
Not forgetting that in the early 60s, a lot of Americans probably wouldn't
have
taken pride in being the nation that gave the world soul and jazz. Does
Bernard keep reminding us about Sartre, Alain Delon, and New Wave films?

And then there's the 'British mods are best' one, which is always a load of
rubbish, as British kids are as clearly capable of not getting it (together
with a bit of arrogance that being British makes them right) as anyone else.
Though obviously the numbers, good and bad, are higher.
