I feel that if you are at all unsure that you should start at fashion ground
zero--the basic two piece suit. This garment can take you anywhere. On the
fashion venn diagram this is the overlap from Miles Davis, Paul Weller, and
James Bond. The important thing is to get the right suit and wear it every
day. After two weeks, no one at work will bat an eye and you'll always look
sharp.
Some specific guidelines are as follows: look for a wool number with a three
button front. Lapels should be no wider than 2.5". Try to find one with
natural shoulders (no padding) and without darts (seams) on the front.
There should be one or two buttons on the cuff, more than that and it's just
too darn stylish for the ground zero garment that I am trying to describe.
Pants should be plain front straight leg, width at cuff no greater than 7.5"
If you want a turned up cuff this should be no greater than 1" wide. Don't
worry about pant length, you will get this adjusted when you get the pants
altered. You can have the waist taken in an inch or two and the length
adjusted about six inches (shorter, not longer) you can also have the cuff
width taken in to the desired 7.5". Bottom of cuff should come to top of
back of shoe for the crucial high water look. You can also have the sleeves
shortened on the jacket and take it in a bit if needed.
Anyway find the basic garment--you'll almost certainly have to buy a used
model at Salvation Army, Goodwill, Church Bazaar etc. This should cost
between $5 and $20 US. Get it altered--most dry cleaners will provide this
service, another $20-$30 US.
Wear with white shirt.
Find (or have altered) a necktie no wider than 3", no less than 2". Get
several of these to express your changing moods.
Rent video "La Dolce Vita." Pay careful attention to Marcello Mastrianni as
he moves through life with the same basic suit (until he puts on the
decadent white one at the end.) You'll curse the requisite white shirt as
crucial dialog is missed as white subtitles crawl across white shirtfront.
Hope this helps...I can be more specific on the shirt if you wish, but you
can't go wrong matching Marcello's.
Sorry to give everything in English units. I expect you all might be on the
metric program up there.
