curtis mayfield was probably the most important of them all. unlike stevie
wonder and marvin gaye (his oft quoted peers), he did it all on his own,
without a large corporation like motown behind him. apart from that, he
wrote (IMHO) the best soul tracks of the 60's, bar none. and he got banned
by the BBC in the 80s for attacking margaret thatcher (sadly only
lyrically), for which you can only admire the geezer.

there's now a big hole left in music.
