>minstrels, "hot tamale baby" > >speaking of whom...whatever happened to the minstrels? >last i heard, they moved to la and the organ player >from the delta 72 joined...are they still around? *I* haven't personally seen Dave, but my sources say he's
living in San Francisco. These sources are very reliable as both have seen him -
one actually got a copy of their "new" cd - it was actually new January 99, but
wasn't printed until recently. I now have possession of this cd and I LOVE IT.
Great, great stuff - the Minstrels are constantly coming up with better, newer
material and I just wish that they'd personally get their act together, stop
hanging out with BJM and/or other druggies and make something happen with the
band. However, I've also heard through the grapevine that George is in Fiji
running from the Canadian gov't or maybe his ex-wife, so...no word on if they're
even still together as a band at all. It's an off-on thing going on what, 10
years now?
Anyway - what can be expected of the new cd? Well, there is
that BJM influence and Sophie's in there on most of the songs. So it's a little
dreamy sometimes, but it works well with the French lyrics, and the English
ones, too. Then they've "updated" their sound with lots of reverb, noise
loops and even some drum-n-bass. But they stay true to form and keep it heavy on
the 60s side, too - with sitar, Hammond, "Serge & Bridget" style duets and
fuzz guitar. I totally think that George is the 90s Quebecois Serge Gainsbourg.
Oh, oops - it isn't the 90s anymore. Oh well, you get my drift. Fellow
collaborators on the cd include Nic Jodion (who also mixed a lot of it at an LA
studio and he was a second-to-original lead guitarist), George's brother and
many more. As to the Delta 72 organist having joined - I can't tell you that
because I don't follow the Delta 72 at all and I don't know who that is. I also
don't have my cd case with me, but if you really gotta know, please email me
private and I'll give you a musician listing. Um, also - I haven't heard
anything about it being available in stores, but maybe; and of course I
can't remember the name of the cd cause I have a poor memory for such things -
the name reminds me of the last Makers album. I'll get back to you with it.
(something like Psychadelica Sexualis?)
>oh, and where can a fella get his hands on
their
>much-touted-by-syd "les minstrels" quebecois output? I found my cd at a used-cd store in Vancouver, BC off Robson.
It was filed under "French Music" and it's called "St. Laurent Des Pin". There
are 2 cds and one lp, which I don't have, but I've heard it isn't so great.
